No repeat for Phil Ivey

Well, it looks like Phil Ivey won't be repeating in 2008 at the LAPC as he was eliminated yesterday outside of the money.

Defending champion Phil Ivey made a run at the title once again, but lost a coinflip to end his tournament. Earlier in the day Ivey lost a huge pot with pocket kings when his opponent spiked an ace with A-K all in preflop. That hit left Ivey looking to double and he finally got his chips in the middle with A-8 against the small blind's pocket sixes. The board bricked out and the champ was sent home.

That's funny because I lost a huge pot at Cake Poker yesterday with KK against A-K. The only difference would be that my pot cost me about $80 and Ivey's cost him potentially millions.

Phil Ivey sitting pretty at LAPC

Last year, Phil Ivey won the L.A. Poker Classic. This year, he's in 22nd after day 1. Could a repeat be in store?

Reigning L.A. Poker Classic champion Phil Ivey sits in 22nd place entering Day 2 with 74,275 chips, over twice the average stack. Ivey’s lone WPT win was worth $1.5 million. He has a grand total of nine WPT in the money finishes to his name; all but one has been for a final table appearance. Ivey has nearly $3 million in earnings on WPT felts and holds five WSOP bracelets to boot. Interestingly, none of Ivey’s pieces of hardware have been won in Texas Hold’em tournaments (Pot Limit Omaha twice, Limit SHOE, Limit Seven Card Stud High-Low, and Limit Seven Card Stud).

KJ Nam currently leads the field with Phil Ivey's good friend Daniel Negreanu currently sitting in fifth. The LAPC is one of the most popular stops on the WPT so this should be a good one. We'll keep you updated.

Ivey and Dwan mix it up

In what could be seen as a warmup for the "durrrnament" or as Phil Ivey's rise back to 2008 level profits. Phil Ivey played Tom Dwan on Full Tilt the other day and won some huge pots. Surprised? Didn't think so.

The hand was Pot Limit Hold-em and Phil Ivey raised to $3k which durrrr called. The flop was [Td 3s 4s] and durrrr checked while Phil Ivey bet $4k which durrrr then raised to $13,300 which Ivey called. The turn was a  [Ts] and after a bit of thinking durrrr bet $23,600 which Ivey then raised to $74,000 which didn’t take long before durrrr raised all-in….which cost Phil Ivey an additional  $36,385.50 to call as he went all-in (and was the smaller stack). At this time durrrr showed [Tc Ac] while Phil Ivey had the flush with [8s Js]. The river was a [Qh] not improving either hand and Phil Ivey took down the monster pot worth $253,370.50.

This was quite the pot for Phil, but he didn't stop there. Just a few hands later this went down. Read More...

It’s looking like this Dwan challenge is actually going to happen

We've written about the Tom Dwan challenge before, but it was starting to look like it wasn't going to happen. Then Full Tilt built some tables and it looks like the thing is back on.

The first "durrrr" challenge (slated to be Patrik Antonius vs Tom Dwan) is supposed to get underway at any moment.

Full Tilt Poker has accommodated Dwan and Antonius by opening up four "durrrr" Challenge $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha tables. They are all heads-up tables, as this will be a heads-up challenge.

Antonius is first, then I believe it's David Benyamine and if Dwan has any money left, Phil Ivey. Should be interesting, to say the least.
