Phil Ivey wins 7th bracelet, where do we go from here?

phil ivey 7th braceletPhil Ivey won his 7th bracelet in the $2,500 Omaha/7 Card Stud Hi-Lo mixed game. Here's how he did it:

In the final hand, Lee moved all in on third street with {J-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Ivey made the call with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{3-Clubs}. Ivey improved to three queens by the river and Lee finished with only a pair of jacks. Ivey’s three queens were enough to win him his second gold bracelet of the 2009 World Series of Poker and his seventh overall. Phil Ivey is now tied with Billy Baxter for fourth all-time in bracelet wins. In addition to his seventh bracelet, Ivey received $220,538 in prize money.

This further solidifies Ivey's position as the top poker player in the world and can only do more to improve his image at Full Tilt Poker (speaking of, here's a Full Tilt Poker Review). He is currently tied for 6th place on the all-time bracelet list and with one more will move into a tie for 4th. Can he do it this year? I certainly think there's a good chance, but wouldn't count on it. Winning a bracelet is HARD.

Ivey does it, wins sixth bracelet!

Of all the games for Phil Ivey to win his sixth WSOP bracelet it's kind of fitting that he would do it playing Deuce to Seven Draw. Considered a game that requires a lot of skill it kind of makes sense. Ivey won about $96k from winning this tournament, but the real prize comes in his bracelet bets which was anywhere from 3 to 10 million.

Here's how Ivey did it:

After a period of trading blinds, John Monnette moved all in and Phil Ivey made the call. Everyone left their seats trying to get as close to the action as possible, and each player declared he was taking one card. Ivey had 7-6-4-2, while Monnette held 9-7-5-2. John Monnette showed his card first, revealing another seven, meaning that he was drawing dead. Phil Ivey turned over the five for the winning hand and his sixth WSOP gold bracelet, his first since 2005.

Phil Ivey out of $10k Seven Card Stud event

Another event Phil Ivey was playing in his quest to get another bracelet was the $10,000 Championship Seven Card Stud event. I honestly don't know how he has the time to play all of these events, but it would appear he will have more time now that he is knocked out of this one.

Phil Ivey was one early elimination, moving all in on third street with the {4-Clubs} in the door. Soheil Shamseddin called with the {K-Diamonds} up, and picked up a six on fifth street to go with the two other sixes he had in the hole. Shamseddin’s trips were enough to best Ivey’s two pair and send him home early on Day 2.

If you remember Ivey won one of this five bracelets in 2002 at the $1500 Seven Card Stud event.

Teacher beats student: Ivey loses to Doyle

Doyle Brunson is generally considered either one of the best poker players of all time or THE best poker player of all time. Phil Ivey is generally considered to be one of the best players right now or THE best player right now. A match up between these two would have to be pretty intriguing to any with even the slightest interest in poker.

Phil Ivey, ever the gambler, was willing to play a game of Doyle Sez where Doyle gets to pick the games. They played six-card Razz with the best low of 75432. "I played that a lot 30-40 years ago and it’s a tricky game," Doyle wrote. He says that Phil caught on the game pretty fast, but Doyle held all the cards and beat his opponent. "I’ve got some more games for him if he wants to continue," Doyle continued.

When it was all said and done Doyle won $2 million dollars. Somehow I don't think Phil Ivey is quite done with him though.
